Diving Gili Air
Gili Air is the small, car-free island between Lombok and Gili Trawangan, and one of the easiest places in Indonesia to go diving. The reefs start a few metres from the beach, the water sits at 27 to 30 degrees all year, and the boat ride to any of our 16 dive sites takes five to fifteen minutes. Our dive centre is on the east coast, right on Turtle Point, the house reef where green and hawksbill turtles rest between the corals.
Scuba diving Gili Air works for every level. First-timers do a pool session and a guided reef dive to 12 metres. Certified divers join the morning boat for two dives at Shark Point, Halik or Hans Reef and are back by 1pm. Advanced divers get the deep pinnacles of Simon's Reef and the Shipwreck. Freedivers train on the line in calm, clear water with the Molchanovs side of the family.

Our dive centre is on the calm east coast of Gili Air, on Turtle Point, next to Raja Bar and Restaurant. From the harbour it is a short walk, bike ride or cidomo along the beach path: there are no cars on the island. Drop by for a coffee, meet the crew, and plan your diving around the Gili Islands.
Coming from Bali, the fast boat from Padang Bai lands on Gili Air in an hour and a half to two hours at sea. From Lombok, Bangsal harbour is a twenty-minute crossing.
About us
We are Ang, Laia and Theo, and Moana Dive Air is the small dive centre we always wished for on Gili Air. Ang grew up between Lombok and Sumbawa and knows these reefs like his own garden; Laia plans every dive day; Theo runs the freediving. You are never just another booking here: four divers per guide, brand-new gear, and a crew that remembers your name.
Our guides have spent years in the Gili Islands and spot the frogfish before anyone else, and the tanks are full and the boat on time long before you walk in.

Yes, and it is one of the easiest places in Indonesia to dive well. Sixteen dive sites sit five to fifteen minutes from the beach, the water is 27 to 30 degrees all year, and the sites range from the three-metre turtle reef in front of our centre to forty-metre pinnacles for advanced divers. Green and hawksbill turtles are seen on almost every dive, the island is small, car-free and calm, and the currents are usually gentle enough for relaxed drift diving.
Yes, and they are the highlight, not the worry. White-tip and black-tip reef sharks live on the reefs around the Gili Islands; at Shark Point a cave at eighteen metres is where juvenile white-tips rest, and Halik and Deep Turbo see them on the deeper ridges. They are small, shy and completely harmless to divers. Bigger visitors such as mantas are luck only, never promised.
Any month, there is no closed season. April to October is the dry season with the calmest sea and the clearest water, and September, October, May and June are the sweet spot with the island not yet full. July and August are the busiest weeks, so book earlier. November to March brings plankton, lower visibility and a real chance of something big passing through. A 3 mm wetsuit is enough all year.
With Moana Dive Air, a Try Scuba day with a pool session and one ocean dive is IDR 1,400,000, or IDR 2,200,000 with two morning dives. A guided fun dive for certified divers is IDR 650,000 and drops 10% from three dives. The SSI Open Water course is IDR 6,900,000 and Advanced Adventurer IDR 5,900,000. Every price is per person and includes equipment, boat and guide or instructor. The Gili Matra Marine Park fee of IDR 100,000 is paid separately, once, in cash.
Yes. Try Scuba is made for complete beginners: no certification, no experience, and you do not need to be a strong swimmer, just comfortable in the water. You start in the pool at the dive centre with your SSI instructor, then do a real guided dive on a calm, shallow reef to a maximum of twelve metres with the instructor beside you the whole time. If you would rather test the water first, a pool-only session is IDR 800,000.
The SSI Open Water course takes three days with us: a full pool day, then four ocean dives over the next two days, with the theory done on the SSI app, where the first chapters are free before you even arrive. You finish certified to dive to eighteen metres anywhere in the world, for life, and we teach it four students to an instructor. If you did a Try Scuba day with us first, it counts towards the course and you only pay the Open Water price.
We are on the east coast of Gili Air, on Turtle Point, next to Raja Bar and Restaurant, a short walk from the harbour. From Bali, fast boats leave Padang Bai daily and reach Gili Air in roughly an hour and a half to two hours at sea; from Lombok, the public boat from Bangsal harbour takes about twenty minutes. There are no cars or motorbikes on the island: you walk, cycle or take a cidomo horse cart, and the beach path brings you straight to our door.
Yes. Freediving is the other half of the family: Theo teaches Molchanovs courses from a one-day Discover Freediving session at IDR 2,200,000 to Wave 1 over two days, Wave 2 over three, coaching and Deep Week, all in the warm, clear water off Gili Air. You do not need to be a scuba diver first. The freedive team has its own WhatsApp line, which you will find on the freediving page.
